Sweep is an intuitive sound editing application. This session introduces
Sweep and its integration with other components of a Linux based audio
workstation.
Linux is only now beginning to emerge as a platform of choice
for audio processing. Coding these systems, in which one has the ability
to both generate and modify sounds, is both engaging and somewhat esoteric.
In order to introduce the concepts involved this session will cover the
basics of digital audio and explain how to best make, record, and edit
sound on Linux.
Developers will be shown how to extend the functionality
of Sweep using its modular plug-in architecture. This has been designed to
accommodate the needs of both audio researchers and the free software
community, with features such as automated user interface construction and
extensive support for the reuse of existing audio code. Lastly, Sweep's
interoperability with other Linux applications will be demonstrated,
showing some of the ways it can fit in to the wider process of media
production
