The KDE 4 platform is well known for its layers of abstraction, which enable it to run natively on a number of different platforms and form factors. One of those abstraction layers is Phonon. It stands at the heart of both KDE's and Qt's multimedia needs and powers mighty applications like Amarok as well as tiny ones such as KDE's sound notification system.
