Over the years, the schedule of FOSDEM evolved into a format that provides different sort of talks and sessions, grouped as follows:
The Main Tracks consist of 6 topics (that change each year) for which the FOSDEM organisers invite 3 speakers (more or less, subject to slight variations) who are project leads or active contributors.
The Lightning Talks sport a highly appreciated format that consists in many 15 minute talks on a large spectrum of topics (all being directly related to open source or Free Software projects, obviously). The nice thing about having such a short time is that speakers tend to get to the point very directly, and that you can hear about a lot of projects and initiatives.
All those talks are held in the room H.2215 (Ferrer), next to the main Infodesk in the H building.
The "DevRooms" are the most collaborative part of the conference: opensource and Free Software projects contact the FOSDEM organisation team during a call for papers phase in order to request a room for their project. When they are being granted one, they work out their own schedule of talks and activities, without the FOSDEM organisation team being further involved.
As FOSDEM is primarily a perfect occasion for cross-pollination and interaction between projects and communities, as so many key projects and contributors are present, several such initiatives have started to take place over the years.
We also provide our schedule in an optimised format for navigating on smart phone devices, implemented with jQuery Mobile (kudos to their work for making ours so easy). It is still experimental, but has already been reported to work great.
