Edward Nevill

Ed Nevill has been working with the ARM architecture since 1988. He designed the Thumb instruction set and the ARM Jazelle architecture. He has been working with Java since 1998.

Ed is also a fully qualified commercial pilot and is qualified to instruct to commercial level.

Edward Nevill was lead architect of the ARM Jazelle architecture and has been responsible for porting and optimising Java technology to the ARM processor since 1988.

Prior to his work on Java he was responsible for writing the ARM Thumb compiler and developing the Thumb instruction set.

Between 1988 and 1994 he worked for Acorn Computers Ltd (who developed the original ARM processor) as part of their Programming Languages Group and subsequently as part of their OS development team.

Between 2006 and 2009 Ed took a career break to pursue an alternative career as a commercial pilot.

In 2009 Ed returned to programming and is now working on optimising OpenJDK for the ARM.
