Ed Schouten
Ed Schouten is an Open Source/Free Software developer from the Netherlands. He has been a FreeBSD developer since 2008 and an LLVM developer since 2010.
When Ed started studying back in 2003, he became a member of his university's UNIX users group (Dispuut Interlink), where he developed a strong interest in Free/Open Source Software. Around 2005, he started contributing to the FreeBSD project. Initially he focussed on fixing smaller bugs and maintaining third-party packages ('ports'), but later on he started to focus on larger projects. Projects include:
- 2007: Together with another member of Dispuut Interlink, port FreeBSD over to the Microsoft Xbox.
- 2008: Reimplement FreeBSD's TTY layer to be multi-processor safe.
- 2009: Implement a generic terminal rendering library ('teken'), to be used by FreeBSD's console driver.
- 2009: Work towards importing the Clang C/C++ compiler into FreeBSD's base system.
- 2010: C/POSIX conformance improvements.
These projects eventually awarded him developer access to the FreeBSD and LLVM projects in 2008 and 2010, respectively. Apart from these two projects, Ed has contributed to many other Open Source projects over time.
By the end of 2014, Ed founded the CloudABI project, which aims to provide a way to easily and intuitively design strongly sandboxed applications for UNIX-like operating systems. CloudABI is Free Software and is funded through his private company called Nuxi.
