Ever got tempted to program those small 8 bits microcontrollers but were afraid at the first glance of a schematic?
David will be talking about his experience in designing and programming 8 bits embedded platforms with Open Source tools. He will attempt to demystify the electronic side of embedded projects by adopting a software developer approach. The Tux Droid Open Source robot will be used as an example.
A broad look at embedded design will be presented, from hardware design and realization to embedded programming and computer interfaces.
A more detailed walk-through will cover how to choose a microcontroller, peripherals, interfaces with various hardware blocks, major communication bus, development toolchain, JTAG or other in-circuit debugging techniques and interfacing your MCU with a computer.
David will finish with an overview of some end-user applications developed for the robot. These are good examples of how you could expand the power of small microcontrollers with the technology available from your computer.
