Ian Formanek is Chief Technology Officer for the NetBeans project in the Developer Platforms group at Sun Microsystems. In 1997, Ian co-founded NetBeans, a Czech company developing a Java IDE written in Java, and became head of the development team and co-architect of NetBeans. In the fall of 1999, NetBeans was acquired by Sun Microsystems and soon afterwards turned into an open source project. In the last two years, Ian has spent most of his time working on the project's design and vision.
Ian has a Masters degree in Computer Science from Charles University in Prague. He is also an enthusiastic helicopter pilot, photographer and proud cat
