Long time user of Linux and other open source software. Former European Commission official (retired). After a series of operational responsibilities (user support, email, networking, application development), leader of the team responsible for the IDABC (http://ec.europa.eu/idabc/) programme. This programme was centered around cooperation between the European Institutions and the Member State administrations to construct and/or operate IT infrasctructure and IT applicatins supporting the goals of the European Union. The IDABC programme also provided a forum to the Member State adminstrations to discuss issues related to interoperability, open standards and the use of open source software. Results of the programme included the European Interoperability Framework (EIF) version 1 and version 2, the open source repository OSOR and the semantic interoperability community SEMIC (both now operated under Joinup) and the European Union Pulic License (EUPL). At present a fellow of the OpenForum Europe Academy (http://www.openforumacademy.org/), sustaining member of the FSFE and volunteer for IT related tasks in local social and cultural organisations in my home town Gent.
