XAudio, an Audio extension for the X Window System
XAudio extends the X Window System to support audio processing; this extension is currently implemented as a loadable module for the X.org server. X clients can capture, playback and process audio through the X server.
Audio processing is network transparent, optionally low-latency can be achieved through a shared memory mechanism. An audio manager performs functions analogous to the Window/Compositing manager, such as determining mix-down of streams from multiple clients.
The XAudio project aims to showcase the considerable benefits of integration compared to stand-alone audio daemons. And will demonstrate the feasibility of this approach and hopefully provide a standard implementation of this concept.
