The online video space risks being ruled by proprietary software (like Flash), DRM, and gatekeepers (Google/Youtube). Miro is our best strategy against that, and our best strategy for an online video world where users are in charge. I'll talk about what Miro does, what's cool about it, and how you can help.
Miro is like a TV on your computer. And Miro is a strategy for democratizing media and cracking open the online video space.
Miro subscribes to RSS feeds, downloads videos, seamlessly integrates Bittorrent, and it plays practically every video format. Users can browse a "Channel Guide" of free video RSS feeds in a built-in web browser. Miro is available for Linux, Mac, and Windows, and it was downloaded over 2 million times last year.
It's made by Participatory Culture Foundation, a mission-based nonprofit (NGO) who's goal is to open up media.
