http://www.fosdem.org/index/news/callforpapers
(2004-08-31 07:52:58) Check out to know how your project can have a developer room and/or a booth at FOSDEM 2005<br />Dear Free and Open Source Developers,
<br />
Dear Free and Open Source Project Leaders,
<br />
<br />
The FOSDEM (Free and Open Source Developers' European Meeting) is a free and non-commercial event for the community and organized by the community. Its goal is to provide Free and Open Source developers and communities a place to meet to
<br />
<li> get in touch with other developers and projects,
<br />
<li> get informed about the latest developments in the Free and Open Source world,
<br />
<li> attend to interesting talks and presentations held in large conference rooms by Free and Open Source project leaders and committers on various topics,
<br />
<li> and to promote the development and the benefits of Free and Open Source solutions.
<br />
<br />
As for being a free event, participation and attendance is totally *free of charge* (although we thankfully accept donations and sponsorship).
<br />
<br />
To help the community, FOSDEM sets up 'DevRooms' (Developer Rooms) where teams can meet and discuss about their projects. It is also a place where a team can discuss, code (hacking sessions), publicly present latest directions, tutorials, news and decisions. The FOSDEM Team thinks it's very important that developers from around the world can meet 'in real life' and we believe projects can benefit from these meetings. Common facilities such as network/internet connectivity and beamers will be provided upon request (see below).
<br />
<br />
If your team wants to share experience and latest news or directions about your project, feel free to contact us to book a developer room.
<br />
<br />
We need to know
<br />
<li> the name of the group (and maybe a short explanation about what your group/project is all about),
<br />
<li> the (expected) attending audience,
<br />
<li> whether you need a beamer,
<br />
<li> and whether you need network (internet) connectivity.
<br />
<br />
We also need to know if you want the room for half a day or more, as we want to share the rooms between several teams if possible, so to provide that commodity to a largest possible number of projects.
<br />
<br />
We do need a schedule two months before the event takes place. That schedule is actually a list of speakers/subjects and public activities you're planning in the DevRoom. It will be printed in the FOSDEM folder that is handed out to visitors, printed on the DevRoom entrance and published on the website. As we receive requests from many projects, please understand that we shall only give DevRooms to those who will make talks (or similar activities) and who will send us their schedule.
<br />
<br />
Teams can also contact us to get a booth (stand). We need to know whether you will need a network connectivity, how many tables you need for your project, etc. You may use those to promote your project, sell stuff (posters, t-shirts, ...), hand out software, make demonstrations, or (almost) whatever comes to your mind as long it's not a purely commercial attitude. Booth is not a "cyber-café", so not to be used for Internet surfing : there is the hacker's room available for that.
<br />
<br />
The 5th FOSDEM edition will be February 26-27 2005 in Brussels (Belgium). More details about the event will be announced and published on the official <a href="http://www.fosdem.org">FOSDEM website</a>.
<br />
<br />
If you're interested in booking a DevRoom or a stand or just having more information, please send us an e-mail to <a href="mailto:devrooms@fosdem.org?subject=CallForPapers">devrooms@fosdem.org</a>

<br />
<br />
The Ecuyer's Team hope to see you at the FOSDEM Saturday Night Fever that will take place on the 21 February 2004.

[Fosdem Event] Jabber Server
http://www.fosdem.org/index/news/news_20040208
(2004-02-08 22:10:25) The FOSDEM site runs now its Jabber server<br />We are happy to announce to you all the existence of the FOSDEM Jabber server : jabber.fosdem.org
<br />
<br />
The reason we have set up the FOSDEM Jabber server is to let all FOSDEM visitors communicate with eachother, in one-on-one conversations but also in group chat, using an open, standards based protocol. It also allows people to become acquainted with what Jabber is and how it works.
<br />
<br />
These are the services offered by the FOSDEM Jabber server:
<br />
<br />
<li> A Jabber account if don't already have one elsewhere (follow the website instructions), with SSL connections for secure communication.
<br />
<li> Group chat rooms, open to everyone, at conference.jabber.fosdem.org
<br />
<br />
The idea is that before and during the event, people will gather in the 'hallway' chat room, to discuss everything about FOSDEM. Talk about when you arrive, where to meet up with others, what the interesting talks are, what to do during the evenings, etc, etc.
<br />
<br />
Also, during the event, there will extra rooms that are coupled with the physical rooms where presentations will be held. This makes it possible to share what you see and hear in the room with others and possibly comment on it, so both other occupants of the room, as well as the rest of the world can take part. Think live reporting.
<br />
<br />
All conversations in the chat rooms will be logged for later reference, so don't have to miss out on anything.
<br />
<br />
This brings me to website: <a href="http://jabber.fosdem.org">http://jabber.fosdem.org</a>
<br />
<br />
On this site you can find an introduction into Jabber, how to set up and use you FOSDEM Jabber account if don't already have one, and the group chat logs.
<br />
<br />
The plan is to have more Jabber facilities later, which will be announced when available.
<br />
<br />
We hope to see you all in hallway@conference.jabber.fosdem.org, and if you have ideas, comments or questions, please let us know and contact ralphm@jabber.fosdem.org.
[Visitors Info] Some FOSDEM news ...
http://www.fosdem.org/index/news/news_20040205
(2004-02-05 13:18:38) As you know, FOSDEM is in a bit more than 2 weeks !
This year, we'll have something totally new: a well organised, succesful saturday evening event! It is a buffet organised in the hotel where speakers will stay. That means that if you booked in the same hotel, you're very well located to enjoy it fully ( you'll be in Belgium, see what I mean? ;-)
Who can participate to the buffet ? In no particular order, this is designed for
<li> Speakers;
<li> FOSDEM staff;
<li> Developers' room people;
<li> FOSDEM donators.
The threshold for FOSDEM donations is 50 euros. By that we mean that people who donated 50 euros or more will be welcome at the buffet without any extra cost (in the limit of available places of course, first to donate, first to get access to the buffet). We planned a buffet for 190 people.
Managing the attendance to this buffet will ask some work, and we will ask your collaboration. If you donate (or already donated) before the event, and want to attend the buffet, please send a mail to <a href="mailto:buffet-confirm@fosdem.org?Subject=BuffetReservation">buffet-confirm@fosdem.org</a> to confirm.
If you plan to donate 50 euros or more during the event, and plan to attend the buffet, send a mail to <a href="mailto:buffet-planned@fosdem.org?Subject=BuffetPlanned">buffet-planned@fosdem.org</a>. (IMPORTANT: this mail will not be a reservation for the buffet, it is your donation that will be taken in account).
The buffet is an extra return for the donators, it doesn't replace a return item of the previous years. This was made possible thanks to <a href="http://www.mysql.com" target=_new>MySQL</a> with help of <a href="http://www.lwn.net" target=_new>Linux Weekly News</a>. We'll be able to give you all details of the buffet in the coming days (what'll be available), but we can already tell you it'll be good food and drink, in sufficient quantities.
So returns for donators to the 2004 edition are like this :
<li> 25 euros: t-shirt
<li> 50 euros: t-shirt + pocket guide + entrance to buffet if available
<li> 100 euros: t-shirt + O'Reilly book + entrance to buffet if available
<li> 150 euros: tshirt + O'Reilly book + chance to win 4 books of your choice from O'Reilly + entrance to buffet if available
All donators of 25 euros or more have a chance to win a subscription to magazines that sponsor us:
<li> Linux Magazine France subscriptions: 10 (France / Belgium)
<li> Linux Magazine (English): 20 (international)
<li> Todo Linux (Spanish): 2 (international)

[Speakers] Introduction talk & background contest
http://www.fosdem.org/index/news/news_20040111
(2004-01-17 13:42:02) This year, we have the honor to have Tim O'Reilly giving the FOSDEM introduction talk. Check out the abstract of <b>The Open Source Paradigm Shift</b>.
Other point not to forget : the FOSDEM background contest.<br />The Open Source Paradigm Shift
<br />
<br />
The computer industry has gone through a sea change in the past few years. The killer applications of the web era turned out not to be PC-based software packages like the web browser, but web hosted applications like google, mapquest and amazon.com. These applications are built on top of Linux and Apache, yet they are themselves fiercely proprietary. But what would most developers do with their source code? These massive systems are valuable for their data as much as for their programs. And by opening up XML web services APIs to that data, the most innovative of these sites are creating new opportunities for hackers to "scratch their own itch." One of the greatest challenges for open source in the next few years is to understand and adapt to the paradigm shift implicit in network computing, and to shed the legacy thinking of the desktop era.
